Hailed for his “virtuosity” and “crystal-clear articulation”, pianist Armen Sahakyan is an internationally distinguished performer, acclaimed as an orchestral soloist, recitalist, chamber musician, and accompanist. Described as a pianist who “fascinates audiences” (Badische Neuste Nachrichten), he is recognized for his insight, inspiration, and alluring technique.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, Dr. Sahakyan began his piano studies at age eight with Eleonora Amirbekyan, later continuing with Rosa Tandilyan at the Yerevan State Conservatory, where he earned his Doctorate in Piano Performance in 2006. Trained in the Russian/Soviet piano tradition, he developed a deep musical foundation rooted in discipline, expressivity, and technical excellence. His early success led to a series of solo recitals in France at the invitation of UNESCO at age 10, followed by winning top prizes in competitions including the Bach Concerto Competition, Amadeus Piano Competition, and a special award for the best interpretation of a modern piece at the Prokofiev International Competition in St. Petersburg.
He continued his studies in Germany, earning a Bachelor’s degree in piano performance from Karlsruhe University of Music under Professor Olga Rissin. There he was invited to record a live performance of Bach-Busoni’s Chaconne for SWR Radio. In 2010, he moved to the United States and completed an Artist Diploma at Hamline University in Minnesota with Professor Alexander Braginsky.
Dr. Sahakyan has performed internationally with notable orchestras and at prestigious festivals, including a televised performance of Gershwin’s Concerto in F with the Armenian Symphony Orchestra. His collaborations as a chamber musician include working with esteemed artists such as Maria Egelhof, Boris Belkin, Joseph Rissin, Mikhail Kopelman, Diemut Poppen, Gustav Rivinius, Yuri Zhislin, and Dora Schwarzberg.
Since 2013, Dr. Sahakyan has lived in Salt Lake City, Utah, where he teaches at Utah Valley University and maintains a thriving private studio of over 40 students. With more than 25 years of teaching experience, he is committed to nurturing each student’s unique musical voice. He regularly coordinates student recitals and communicates closely with parents to support long-term progress and a love for music.
